Since the beginning of the Russian offensive in Ukraine, questions have arisen regarding the situation of Russian citizens who are legally residing in Belgium, or who wish to come there.
The Immigration Office will show discernment and will be attentive to Russian citizens temporarily prevented from returning to Russia, or who had a project in Belgium (studies, work, family reunion).

The agreement of 17 May 2007 between the European Community and the Russian Federation on the facilitation of the issuance of short-stay visas (up to 90 days) to citizens of the European Union and the Russian Federation is partially suspended as from 28 February 2022 pursuant to the decision of the Council of the European Union of 25 February 2022 published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 25 February 2022.
The partial suspension of the agreement concerns the persons mentioned in Article 1 (Russian national or regional officials, holders of diplomatic passports, businessmen and women, representatives of business organizations, etc.).
Russian citizens who have arrived legally in Belgium and who, due to the disruption of air connections from several European countries to Russia, are prevented from leaving Belgium when their visa expires, may request the authorisation to extend their stay in Belgium until there is a possibility for them to return from Belgium or another Schengen state.

Russian citizens who are legally staying in Belgium for a limited period of time and who no longer meet the requirements for the renewal of their residence card (card A) may obtain an extension of their authorized stay if, due to the disruption of air connections from several European countries to Russia, they are prevented from leaving Belgium when their residence card expires. This stay extension will be granted until there is a possibility for them to return from Belgium or another Schengen state.
If Russian nationals apply for international protection in Belgium, they will benefit from the samen procedure and treatment as any other asylum seeker.
